Tortola General Information-Tortola Villa Rentals

Tortola At A Glance
Tortola is a gem…mountainous with sweeping, dramatic and tranquil views of nearby islands…unspoiled white sand beaches…quiet evenings in good restaurants and local nightlife in small pubs…unparalleled sailing, diving and other water sports…snorkeling with dolphins…easy day trips to nearby islands…quiet and civilized…a pleasure to explore…

Tortola is located 50 miles east of Puerto Rico within the 60+ islands known as the British Virgin Islands. It is the largest of the BVI and is the center of government and commerce. Road Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands, offers visitors shops, bars and restaurants.

Tortola, like Virgin Gorda, is primarily a beach and water sport destination. IT offers many wonderful private villas with private swimming pools that are nestled on the mountainsides high above the sea. An excellent choice for the more independent travelers as full staff is generally not included-although cooks are available for hire. Most of our villas on Tortola are located hillside providing extremely private settings overlooking dramatic ribbons of islets and cays and white sands beyond.

As with Virgin Gorda, Tortola is an excellent choice for those seeking quiet beaches and sailing as well as peace and quiet…Visitors with more on their agenda than those simple but idyllic pleasures will be disappointed as the island lacks golf, major nightlife and any major shopping.

Tortola excels at offering a quiet and stress free atmosphere…Indeed; it does not take long after arrival to feel the stress melt away as visitors attune to the slower pace of life and relaxed friendliness.

Tortola is known for its glistening white sand beaches and small, protected coves. One of our personal favorites is Smugglers Cove located on the West End (the road is unpaved but passable) and offers exceptional snorkeling. Along the north shore of the island, there is a string of superb beaches which include Long Bay (a magnificent mile long stretch of sand), Apple Bay for surfing (and home of the famous Bomba Shack), Cane Garden Bay which is a magnificent palm lined sandy beach and has a great local bar and water sports as well, Brewer’s Bay with good snorkeling, Josiah’s’ Bay as well as Elizabeth Beach.

Both Smuggler’s Cove and Cane Garden Bay beaches offer reefs that touch the edge of their shores and extending outward several hundred yards, making them exceptional snorkeling spots for t

Visitors to Tortola during the full moon are known to frequent the famous “Bomba’s Surfside Shack” at Apple Bay. Bomba’s is one of the most famous beach bars in the entire Caribbean and offers casual but sometimes wild/over the top fun.

Sailing is the most popular activity in the British Virgin Islands and day sails to neighboring islands are easily arranged and there is a vast array of boats and trips to choose from. Snorkeling in the clear and calm waters is popular as well.

The island offers a good selection of fine restaurants as well as a plethora of casual eateries.

Visitors return to Tortola for savoring exceptional down-island views and passing sailboats, sea breezes, glorious beaches and quiet seclusion.

General Information-Government & Standard Of Living:
Christopher Columbus discovered the British Virgin Islands and named the entire group of islands Las Once Mil Virgenes, after St. Ursula and her legendary 11,000 martyred companions.

In later years, the Spaniards passed through the waters seeking gold and later the pirates who found the islands’ hidden coves and treacherous reefs and ideal base from which to prey on passing ships filled with treasures. Later the British established a plantation economy and developed sugar.

Today there are only around 14,000 inhabitants on Tortola and visitors will find the people quite friendly. The overall feeling on the island, however, remains one of blissfully casual and uncomplicated

History:
Columbus discovered the British Virgin Islands on his second voyage to the New World, in 1493. He named the area “Las Once Mil Virgines” after the 11,000 followers of St. Ursula. Virgin Gorda was so named by Columbus because he felt the island resembled a reclining woman with a protruding belly when viewed from the sea.

The Spaniards officially laid claim to the territory in 1555…For almost a full century; however, the islands were considered too small and unimportant for Spanish settlement so they remained largely uninhabited during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Pirates terrorized the Caribbean shipping lanes with the blessing of one European country or another and the Spanish Armada was finally defeated. Many of the islands were names after various pirates, such as Thatch Island, which is named after Edward Thatch (or Teach-also commonly known as Blackbeard).

The islands were claimed by England in 1628 but the Dutch were the first true settlers arriving in Tortola in 1648. In 1666, British planters took over control of the islands from the original Dutch settlers and they attained the status of a British Colony and remained part of the Leeward Islands from 1872-1956 when the British Virgin Islands became a separately administered entity. In 1967, a new constitution provided for a ministerial system of government and the islands remain under British control today.

History

Tortola Island History

Like many other Caribbean Islands, the Arawak and Carib Indians played a large role in Tortola Island history. Modern history of Tortola Island began in 1493, when Columbus discovered the British Virgin Islands on his second voyage to the New World. He named the area “Las Once Mil Virgines” after the 11,000 followers of St. Ursula. Aside from Tortola Island, Virgin Gorda was so named by Columbus because he felt the island resembled a reclining woman with a protruding belly when viewed from the sea.

The Spaniards officially laid claim to the territory, including Tortola Island, in 1555…For almost a full century; however, Tortola Island was considered too small and unimportant for Spanish settlement so they remained largely uninhabited during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

Pirates terrorized the Caribbean shipping lanes surrounding Tortola Island with the blessing of one European country or another and the Spanish Armada was finally defeated. Many of the small croppings around Tortola Island were named after various pirates, such as Thatch Island, which is named after Edward Thatch (or Teach-also commonly known as Blackbeard).

Tortola Island was claimed by England in 1628 but the Dutch were the first true settlers arriving in Tortola Island in 1648. In 1666, British planters took over control of the islands from the original Dutch settlers and they attained the status of a British Colony and remained part of the Leeward Islands from 1872-1956 when the British Virgin Islands became a separately administered entity. In 1967, a new constitution provided for a ministerial system of government and Tortola Island remains under British control today. Tortola Island is a tropical paradise for all to enjoy!

Golf

Tortola Ferry + Tortola Golf

There is no golf course on Tortola, though that does not mean that golf enthusiasts should avoid the island. Quick island hopping on the Tortola ferry provides access to a great deal of golf. The 18 hole Mahogany Run Golf Course on St. Thomas is accessible from the Tortola ferry as well as the great course of Puerto Rico, providing 18-hole championship play with clubhouses, restaurant and pro shop.

Tortola ferry lines offer scheduled service around the US and British Virgin Islands. Restrictions on flight travel and lack of golf draw many to the Tortola ferry system as a way of reaching many of the activities of the Virgin Islands. The ability to connect to St. Thomas or many other islets make the Tortola ferry a can’t miss experience. The BVI’s flight restriction makes the Tortola ferry the easiest way to travel between, St John, Virgin Gorda, St. Thomas and Tortola.

Nubian Princess, Native Son, and North Sound Express are three of the companies operating Tortola Ferry services. Their routes encompass all the necessary travel to the other Virgin Islands, including ferries to Spanish Town and Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda.

Carriers that fly to the Beef Island, Tortola Airport incluce American Eagle and Air Sunshine.

Nightlife

Tortola Nightlife

When it comes to Tortola nightlife, many villa guests will find that a good bottle of Island rum and their loved ones are all that matters on this sleepy British Virgin Island. Though there are places to get a drink or meet with a few friends or locals, Tortola is not a hot nightlife destination. Most guests find that after a day in the warm Caribbean sun or under the clear Caribbean Sea, the best thing to do is slip between cool cotton sheets and await the sun’s next turn. Come try your hand at the maddeningly slow pass of Tortola!

Dress:
Due to the islands conservative British heritage, there is a dress code of conservative clothing. Light cotton dresses and light jackets and ties for formal wear and typical tropical wear during the day.

Car rental

Tortola Car Rentals

Public transportation is very limited on Tortola Island. Tortola car rentals and taxi offer an efficient way of getting around the island. Tortola car rentals come highly recommended and are an excellent means of transportation on an island that can seem a bit daunting to traverse.  Most Tortola villas are not within walking distance of the beach, so Tortola car rentals are a must for day trips to the sands. Most guests will find their villas on-island to be a short drive from many sites and activities, though the rugged nature of the island makes a Tortola car rental a much easier option than walking around.
